Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT) is a voluntary charitable  non-governmental organization, founded in India in 1965 by Shri Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar. Its original objective was to help meet the needs of victims of disasters that regularly hit the Indian sub-continent. Over the years, AMURT has established teams to create a network that can meet development and disaster needs. In 1985 AMURT broadened the goal to include long-term development and health interventions.

AMURT was registered as a non-profit organization in Kenya in 1993 to run health and development projects across the country. AMURT has supported and worked with communities, national & local governments and organizations offering similar or complimentary services towards improving the wellbeing of communities and families across the country. AMURT’s core programming areas are:

  • Health care provision: Maternal & Neonatal Child Health (FP/RMNCAH); HIV Testing and Counseling; HIV prevention, care & treatment; P/EMTCT; TB prevention, care and treatment; Nutrition;  COVID-19 Prevention and case management;
  • Child protection and social services: OVC Care & Support, DREAMS, Girl child education, and humanitarian relief;
  • Environmental sustainability: Championing mitigation, adaptation and climate restoration;
  • Skills Development : Improving individual and group skills on income generating activities;
  • Youth Empowerment: Provision of youth friendly services; and
  • Food security: Promote farming activities.

Currently, AMURT in Kenya runs projects in sixteen (16) counties: Homabay, Kajiado, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kitui, Kwale, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Marsabit,  Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Samburu and Siaya. Our approach is to identify the needs of the most vulnerable in the community and mobilizing communities to address these needs and then work together towards permanent commitments by the community to address the causative agents of the challenges they face.
