AMURT HEALTH CARE CENTER

Over the last ten years, AMURT Health Care Centre with support from development partners and the Government of Kenya has realized  tremendous growth and currently runs 15 clinical and diagnostic  departments that serves up to 24,000 outpatient cases annualy.

GENERAL OUTPATIENT CONSULTATION

This forms the Primary entry point to the facility. A team of three registered clinical officers provides these services. They attend to an average of 80-100 patients daily. An estimated 240,000 consultations have been made to date. Currently the service is provided at Ksh 100 for the first visit and 50 shillings per review visit.

DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY SERVICE

Our Diagnostic medical laboratory is equipped to provide most basic routine, hematology, TB, HIV and Biochemistry tests. It is also equipped with a modern CD4 machine for monitoring immunological progression of HIV patients and acts as a regional referral centre for Westlands District. The Services are provided by two-registered laboratory Technologists. The laboratory also works in collaboration with other Public and private laboratories in Nairobi such as KEMRI, Medanta Africare and University of Nairobi for more advanced tests.

This in-house medical dispensing service is mainly supported by Cosmos pharmaceuticals. The company supplies essential medicines at highly subsidized prices. This benefit is extended to our clients who access prescribed medicine at half market- price. Other key suppliers include Mission for Essential Drugs Supplies (MEDS), amongst others. The services are provided by two registered pharmaceutical technologists.

This broad range of services that includes, injections, I.V. fluids administration, Mother &Child Clinics, dressing and patient observation is provided by a team of three registered nurses. They also provide patient monitoring in our day-care observation room for critical patients before transfer to referral hospitals.

This service was commenced in 2005.Though old and rapidly becoming outdated the mobile unit is able to take commonly requested films including chest and most peripheral films. The department employs two radiographers on locum basis. Advanced imaging is referred to the nearby Medanta Africare Diagnostic center.

This service was commenced in 2005. The service is provided twice a week by a visiting sonographer from Kenyatta hospital. Most commonly taken scans include, abdominal and obstetric scan for antenatal mothers.

Our Dental unit was established in 2007, as a donation by Mrs. Illa Patel (board member). It consists of a modern Dental chair, compressor and all essential equipment and accessories. The unit can conduct extractions, fillings and procedures such as root canal. The services are provided by one Dental technician.

This is one of our newest departments, having commenced in 2012. It is a partnership with a private optical company, Vision Eye Care, provides basic ophthalmic treatment and optical services such as refractive error corrections. Spectacles are provided at half market prices. Services are provided by two trained opticians.

This department was established in 2012 in response to rising cases of physical deformities such as those due to strokes as a result of hypertension and other non-communicable diseases. Services provided are mainly rehabilitative in nature and chronic pain management. Plans are underway to expand due to growing service demand .The services are provided by one locum Physiotherapist at reasonably affordable costs.

This service mainly entails reduction of fractures and other bone deformities, which are quite common in this region. Services provided include application of different types of plaster of Paris (POP) casts. A visiting orthopaedic surgeon and one plaster technician provides these treatment services at on- call basis.

These clinic located on the second floor was established in December 2011 in response to demand for specialized consultations by our clientele that includes corporate insurance clients.  The clinics include dermatology, general physician services. Plans are underway to add Pediatric, ENT, and Gynecology clinic days. Currently the consultation fee is Ksh. 500. Corporate clients served include, CIC,   BRITAM, NHIF, ECLOF, among others.

AMURT Health Care Center was able to establish a HIV Comprehensive Care Centre in the year 2004, which brought to realization the primary intention of the facility, which was its primary goal. This service was supported by FHI /NASCOP and Nairobi Health management Board under the IMPACT Program. It is one of the earliest HIV comprehensive treatment centres to be established in Nairobi after KNH and Mbagathi Hospitals. The clinic provides ARVs, ARV’s adherence counseling, as well as HIV testing and counseling. From an initial ten patients in 2004 the clinic now serves more than 2000 Patients on a monthly basis. It is supported by the MOH through the USAID- Funded Aphia plus program. The centre also supports the ‘Goldstar program’, a local FHI affiliate, reaching about 300 private medical practitioners with ARVs in Nairobi. The  CCC as is commonly referred to, has gone ahead to integrate TB ,Sexual Reproductive Health and Family Planning services to its core services in line with MOH guidelines.

This service commenced in October 2013. A Toyota Hiace van has already been converted into an ambulance capable of providing basic life support services .Services provided by a trained nurse and driver on call.

AMURT HealthCare Center provides antenatal, postnatal, family Planning and PMTCT, services for mothers. In addition immunizations and well baby clinics for children under five’s. Most types of Family planning methods are available including injectable, oral contraceptives, implants and IUCDs. The MOH and ‘TUPANGE’ programs support these services. A team of three Well-trained Nurses provide the services.

This clinic currently located at the comprehensive care center is supported by the MOH through ‘Kenya Leprosy and TB program’. Since its inception in 2004, numerous cases have been diagnosed through our laboratory and treated at the clinic. Patients diagnosed elsewhere are also referred for monitoring by our TB clinician. Regular supervision is done by the District TB coordinator from the Ministry of health.
